eCoach 3D Tower
eCoach 3D Tower is an extension to simulations provided by eCoach Enterprise and eCoach Basic to provide 3D visualisation of the environment on and around an airport. Advanced ground simulations for aircraft and vehicles are included. Pseudo pilots working positions can be fitted with an extra touch display to control aircraft and vehicles on the ground.
The user interface (UI) has been specially made for ease of use to increase pseudo pilot efficiency both in the air and on the ground. Aircraft can fly fully automated according to flight plan or can be hand flown using a graphical user interface or - if the user prefers - using keyboard with speed keys.
A simulation can contain many elements subject to pilot control, like:
- Airport lighting
- Parking, pushback, and taxiing
- Emergency situations
An important aspect of the 3D tower simulation is a good model of the airport for the tower simulation. eCoach 3D Tower uses several sources to build a realistic airport model containing runways, taxiways, aprons, parking areas, buildings, signs, marking, airport lighting, roads, etc.
The terrain model uses information about terrain levels and type of vegetation. To increase realism and visual recognition, the terrain model can be covered by orthophotos from aerial or satellite photography. Other types of objects may also use photos to provide a close to reality look.
Aircraft, vehicles and liveries
eCoach 3D Twr contains a lot of aircraft models with different liveries for various airlines.
The package also contains several vehicle models.
New aircraft and vehicle models and liveries can be added to the system as required.
eCoach 3D Tower also has the possibility to simulate various types of environment influences:
Time of day (includes simulation of sun and moon)
Time of year (season)
Wind - affects both wind socks and precipitation.
Clouds, precipitation and fog
Solutions for visualisation
The simulator can be delivered and configured for various types of visualization - from projectors used in a large venue, to a set up of small LCD displays.
A solution containing projectors is normally used for large set ups requiring many working positions in the tower cabin, but may be used for smaller installations. The visualization of the tower view can be up to 360 degrees. Depending on choice of projectors, they can be installed in portrait mode for higher vertical field of view. Today there are many types of projectors available on the market and the price of a projector vary a lot. Important parameters for choice of projectors are:
- Resolution (HD to 4K)
- Brightness and contrast
- Lenses available (short/ultra short throw)
- Installation (landscape/portrait)
- Heat produced
When considering projectors for an installation, it's important to have heat and noise generated by the projectors in mind because these factors may require some extra installations.
Curved screen using projectors
The curved screen as in the example above typically uses projectors with HD to 4k resolution. A technique called warping transforms and maps the projector picture to the curved screen. A different feature, edge blending, provides a seamless picture on the curved screen for up to 360 degrees. Both warping and edge blending is provided by the eCoach 3D Tower software. These solutions will use front projection using projectors with short throw lenses mounted in the ceiling.
Flat screens using projectors
Flat screens forming an edged circular screen is another widely used solution. These installations may use front projection as well as back lit projection. However, back lit projection will require more space for the 3D tower simulator to provide the visualisation solution compared to front projection using short throw lenses.
Large and small LCD displays can also be used for visualization of the tower view. Depending on the displays, these can be set up in landscape or portrait mode for better vertical field of view. Horizontal view can be up to 360 degrees.
