eCoach ACC & APP
The eCoach ACC & APP simulators provide the training environments for area and approach control centers. The simulators are based on the technologies eCoach Enterprise and eCoach Basic. The technologies provide scalable solutions depending on customer needs - Tower simulations can be seamlessly integrated. eCoach ACC & APP can be used for various types of training from ab-initio to ATC Controller refresher training.
The simulator contains two major parts, the Simulation System and an ATC system.
The Simulation System contains several subsystems.
ATC Environment Simulator (AES)
The ATC Environment Simulator (AES) is the core of the simulation. The AES is responsible for providing the simulated data such as radar track, AFTN-messages, weather data, time information and a lot more, to the ATC system.
Part of it is also to handle input and responses from pseudo pilots (PP) and training session supervisors (TSS). The basis for the simulations are exercises created by the Exercise Designer and published to and maintained by the AES. The Enterprise version can run multiple exercises in parallel, each with its own set of airspace data. Hence, it's possible to run a simulation for Australia at the same time as a simulation for Mexico.
Exercise Designer (ED)
The Exercise Designer (ED) is a vital part of the simulation system. From these working positions, exercises and airspace is created and maintained. These positions can run exercises locally at the ED itself to test and verify exercise behavior.
The ED is not dependent on the AES to perform its tasks and may very well be installed on a portable PC which can be used off-line to the simulator itself, e.g. at the home office. When the exercise is tested and verified, the PC is connected to the AES network and exercises and/or airspace data is downloaded to the database in the AES. The ED also contains an import function to import exercise data from other formats.
Pseudo Pilot (PP)
From the Pseudo Pilot (PP) working position, instructors and supervisors can control simulated data such as aircraft, vehicles, weather, emergencies etc. The user interface contains radar view for control of airborne aircraft and if ground simulations are part of the simulation, a separate surveillance window for ground control. This window can be put on a separate touch input device (see eCoach 3D Tower for more information).
Training Session Supervisor (TSS)
The Training Session Supervisor (TSS) controls the training environment via the Server Manager application. From this application the TSS can assign working positions, pseudo pilots, and other equipment to a training session and get the status of the equipment and the running exercises.
The TSS can assign working positions and pseudo pilots to a running exercise, and also update software and airspace data on the system.
The eCoach ATC system receives simulated data from the eCoach ATC Environment Simulator, similar to an operational ATC system receiving operational data.
Flight Data Processing (FDP)
Flight plans, ATS messages, and MET messages are handled by the Flight Data Processing unit before data distribution to working positions and to the Surveillance Data Processing. The eCoach FDP computes flight profile, trajectory and estimates (4D) based on available information from the flight plan, including information regarding departure and arrival runway, SID, STAR, and IAP. This information is also used to calculate the sectors involved in the flight, which are used for strip distribution and flight lists updates.
Surveillance Data Processing (SDP)
Surveillance data (radar, ADS, MLAT) are handled by the Surveillance Data Processing unit. This unit will associate the surveillance data with flight plans before distributing associated system tracks to the working positions. The SDP is also responsible for processing safety net data:
- Short Term Conflict Alert (STCA)
- Minimum Safe Altitude Warning (MSAW)
- Area Penetration Warning (APW) also called Danger Area Infringement Warning (DAIW)
- Jurisdiction Mismatch Warning
Controller Working Positions (CWP)
The Controller Working Position (CWP) contains the following functionality:
- Radar Windows
- Flight Data Lists
- Voice Communication terminal
- Information System
- SMGCS window (ground simulation)
The number of physical displays to show the various information is configurable. The VCS can also be equipped according to user preferences.
Electronic Flight Strips
The ACC/APP CWP uses flight data lists and can be equipped with strip printers. Strip content and look can be configured.
For systems which includes ground simulation, the tower working positions can be equipped with Electronic Flight Strips as an option.
Strip content and look can be configured.
Simulation using legacy system for controller training
eCoach can be configured to simulate interfaces towards a legacy system, typically radar data and ATS and MET messages received via AFTN. Other interfaces can also be emulated, but might require additional engineering that needs to be estimated as part of a quote.
